The village of Windermere is actually about 2 miles from Lake Windermere, however it does have its own visitor and tourist attractions, Windermere is reached by eithe rtrain, bus or car, a direct link from the M6 (junction 36) will bring you straight to the top of the village right next to the tourist information centre. This is also the bus terminal and Windermere rail station.
There is a one way traffic system in place so be carefull to look at the signs giving right of way, the shops are lined along the one way system a post office, banks, butchers, cafe's all that you will need during your holiday or day trip.
Theres plenty of Windermere accommodation with B&B's lining the side roads, and hotels on the main roads, you will have plenty of choice, however it is always a good idea to book accommodation in advance as the are can get very busy and fully booked on bank holiday weekends and during the summer holidays.
